HERON MEAD FARM
Heron Mead Farm offers lessons, boarding, training, coaching and summer camps. Owner Kari Stenberg’s mission is to promote safe, correct and effective horsemanship, daily horse care to optimize health and soundness, and fun with the whole horse experience.
Stenberg earned an H-A Pony Club rating in 1989 (the highest national certification level for teaching and training) and competed in Regional and National USPC championships in dressage and eventing 1982-1984. She has studied in lessons or clinics with Bruce Davidson, Philip Dutton, Lucinda Green, Major Anders Lindgren, Karen and David O’Connor, Gunnar Ostergaard, Captain Mark Phillips, Jessica Ransehousen and Jimmy Wofford and competed successfully at USEA events Novice through Preliminary since 1992. Stenberg’s background of dressage, show jumping, eventing and natural horsemanship allows her to be a very versatile trainer and instructor. Having groomed for Olympic level riders, she also explores cutting edge therapies and horse management techniques that can spot and heal health and soundness issues at an early stage.
Lessons are directed at students’ specific interests, which range from competing in USEA events to local dressage or hunter shows, combined tests or events, to trail riding at Blue March Lake. Private lessons are 45 minutes and group lessons are an hour, and can be given on the student’s horse or one of the farm’s lesson horses. Stenberg’s unique training method combines classical European dressage and eventing with natural horsemanship techniques. For students interested in showing, services include lessons tailored to help horse and rider prepare for competition, planning the season’s competition calendar, vanning, and coaching at shows.
The farm is home to only fifteen to twenty horses, which means that each horse receives individual attention and customized feeding and turn-out. Facilities include large rubber-floored box stalls, wash stall, heated tack room and bathroom, all weather lighted arena, and direct access to 30+ miles of Blue Marsh Lake trails and State Game Lands. A variety of pastures, paddocks and dry lots accommodate horses including those with insulin resistance or other special needs in all types of weather and all seasons of the year.
Summer camps are offered for all levels from complete beginners to intermediate and advanced riders ages 5 to 18 years. By limiting camp size to six to ten participants, who ride in even smaller groups of three to four, every camper gets plenty of individual attention. Safety, fun and education are the top priorities. In addition to riding, campers learn about horse care, play games, and develop a greater respect for themselves, other people and animals.
For the Horse Farms Open House: Heron Mead Farm will offer pony rides. Students at all levels will be doing riding demonstrations throughout the day and giving visitors tours of the farm.
