Determined to learn, she interned under head trainer Sara Strauss in 2013 and was hired as a professional trainer in 2016. Leigha specializes in liberty work, colt starting, and trick training, incorporating positive reinforcement and honoring each horse’s individual learning style. Board-certified in 2005, she spent much of her career teach- ing future equine veterinarians at her alma mater. In 2020, she joined Boehringer Ingelheim as a Professional Services Veteri- narian, supporting horse owners, students, and practitioners in advancing equine health. After earning a degree inMass Communications, she worked in Louisville, Kentucky, covering the Kentucky Derby and events at the Kentucky Horse Park—where she bought her first horse. Later living in England, she discovered dressage and continued riding upon returning to the U.S. Fran is the author of Riders of a Certain Age and other equestrian titles, and her work has appeared in numerous national publica- tions.
