Make Sure Your Barn is Adequately Insured

By Susan Strawser, Owner/Agent - February 2023

Thinking about insurance is not always on your to-do list but it is important to review your current coverage to make sure you have the protection you need.

Know what your insurance policy covers before you need to make a claim. Here are some of the typical areas that a standard homeowners policy may not provide you with the coverage you need: (1) barns and out-buildings should be insured at their replacement cost value, (2) farm equipment, tools, and tack should be scheduled, (3) liability should cover you for your horses both on your property and off (while at shows, trail riding, vet clinic), and (4) if you are running an equine business (boarding, training, lessons, clinics, shows), the liability should extend (rather than having to find a different policy).

Many policies will exclude coverage on a building used in a business so if you decide to board or give lessons or train, be sure to talk to your insurance agent beforehand. Fry’s Equine Insurance will take the time to listen to you so we can help you find the right type of policy to give you the best protection – even if it’s not with our agency.

We also write coverage for the independent instructor or trainer who doesn’t need property coverage. Our equine liability policies protect you and provide the coverage most barns are requiring you to carry.

Whether you need to insure your farm or equine business (boarding, lessons, training, shows, clinics) or your horse (mortality, medical, surgical), Fry’s Equine Insurance Agency can help you. We believe that education is the key to choosing the right coverage and we are happy to answer your questions.
